NYT Opinion: The Evangelical Rejection of Reason
Although this piece is written very much for the American context, as an evangelical Christian in Australia my spidey sense is tingling with concern that similar trends are at work here. We’re certainly at risk of creating a parallel culture, and the greater public presence of atheism here only makes it more likely that Christians will run and hide. I see the Coalition’s rejection of climate change alongside social policies designed to appeal to religious conservatives as not coincidence, but complementary. Within Christian circles, there seems to be an increasing tendency to fly to the extremes of left-and-right politically and theologically, and considered, moderate views are seen as unacceptable compromise.
